Pioneering Asian and Native Hawaiian marine scientists grapple with questions of belonging as they confront the long history of exploitation in coral reef research. Their work questions who holds authority in science—and what is lost when indigenous perspectives are dismissed. Grounded in the Hawaiian concept of kuleana — a sacred reciprocal responsibility between people and place — they are building new research models that prioritize the needs of local communities.
